The film tells the story of Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet), two people who casually met, fell in love, and drifted apart. If you could willingly have the memory of someone removed from your consciousness, would you? WOULD YOU?įeatures Actors:Elijah Wood,Jim Carrey,Kate Winslet,Kirsten Dunst & Tom Wilkinson The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings perfect closure to this excellent film. There are also strong supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack including songs by E.L.O. Winslet lights up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively free spirit and loose cannon. Carrey is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing short of brilliant-a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Only occasionally is the film laugh-out-loud funny instead it is much more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). Like his scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is more easily explained through the language of film than through words. It does not store any personal data.ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. There’s a lot to say about the details of this film but perhaps the biggest takeaway is this: there is no perfect in life or in others so remember the best of the past but, most important, live each moment to the fullest. We do this partly by acknowledging the aspects of our personality we despise which ultimately neuters them. This film evoked in me what Sam Keen calls a “fire in the belly”-that emotion that is characterized by a longing to be more than we are-or perhaps its more accurate to say to be the best of who we are. They are who we are and Kaufman is brilliant at helping us relate to them with all their flaws and virtues. Kaufman’s characters are vulnerable, imperfect, wickedly funny, heroic at times and horrific in others. Unlike live performance, film gives the artist an unlimited canvas to play with time, perspective, emotion, and depth and Kaufman uses these elements to their fullest. Like many of his movies, Kaufman explores his themes by leveraging the uniquely creative elements of film. Drama takes on a uniquely authentic flavor even through the necessarily exaggerated portrayal of genuinely human moments. Writer Charlie Kaufman is genius at allowing his characters to be real and in Eternal Sunshine, Carrey and Winslet take this permission seriously. It isolates the best and worst about love and attempts to show us that we should embrace both if we want to cherish the most magical parts of life and use the ugly to amplify the beautiful. With Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Gerry Robert Byrne.Įternal Sunshine is a penetrating film about love, loss and rediscovery. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)ĭirected by Michel Gondry.
